THE STORY
Born From A Story
The story behind Munay is a story about people. Each Peruvian artisan, each highland breeder, each pair of hands that touches the fiber has been an inspiration behind this brand. We celebrate the craft, the traditions that endure and the quiet beauty of making something by hand.
“Munay means love and affection in Quechua”
THE LAND
Where It All Begins
Our fibre comes from the high plateaus of the Peruvian Andes, a landscape shaped by wind, altitude and silence. Here, alpacas roam freely across vast open grasslands, producing one of the finest natural fibres on earth. The extreme conditions of the highlands, freezing nights, intense sun, are what give baby alpaca its extraordinary softness and natural thermoregulation.
THE FIBER
More Precious Than Gold
For over 5,000 years, alpaca fiber has been woven into the fabric of Andean life. The Incas considered it more precious than gold. Today, Peru remains the world’s largest producer of alpaca fiber, and Arequipa, where Munay’s workshops are based, is its undisputed capital.
“Every thread carries the soul of Peru.”
THE CRAFT
From Highlands to Hand
From fiber to finished piece
01 – Shearing
Once a year, alpacas are gently sheared by hand in the highlands. Only the finest 10% of each fleece is selected.
02 – Sorting & Spinning
Fibers are sorted by fineness and colour, then spun into yarn using techniques refined over centuries.
03 – Weaving & Knitting
In our Arequipa workshops, some pieces are crafted by hand, knitted, woven or assembled with care and precision.
04 – Finishing
Every garment is inspected, hand-finished and prepared with Munay’s signature packaging before leaving Peru.
Each piece is a testament to the skill, dedication and heritage of Peruvian artisans
